How Long Does a Spray Tan Last?
Honestly? Anywhere from 5 to 12 days — and the difference almost always comes down to one thing: prep.
I know that's not the answer most people are looking for. Everyone wants a number. But here's the truth — your skin going into the appointment matters just as much as the solution going onto it.
Skin that's been properly exfoliated, hydrated, and is completely product-free on the day of your tan holds color longer, develops more evenly, and fades beautifully instead of patchily. Skin that hasn't been prepped? It'll still tan — it just won't last as long or fade as cleanly.
Start with exfoliation
This is the step most people skip — and it's the most important one. Exfoliating 24–48 hours before your appointment removes the dead skin cells sitting on the surface so the solution has a smooth, even base to develop on.
We carry the Unfiltered Co exfoliating mitt and the Alt Sun body brush in studio — both are our top picks because they're effective without leaving any oil or residue on the skin, which is exactly what you need going into a spray tan. No oil-based scrubs, no loofahs. Just clean, prepped skin.
Focus on knees, elbows, ankles, and heels — these spots are naturally drier and will grab more color than you want if they're not buffed smooth.
Hydrate before and after
Hydrated skin holds color longer and fades more evenly. In the days leading up to your appointment, moisturize daily and drink plenty of water. Just make sure you're arriving to your appointment completely product-free — no lotion, no deodorant, no perfume on the day of.
After your tan, daily moisturizing is everything. We carry Sjolie and Spray Studio aftercare products in studio — specifically formulated to extend your tan without breaking it down the way regular lotions can. Ask us at your appointment what we'd recommend for your skin type.
What makes a tan fade faster:
Skipping exfoliation beforehand
Dry, dehydrated skin
Using bar soap or creamy body washes after your tan
Soaking in baths, hot tubs, or pools
Moisturizing with oil-based products
What makes it last longer:
Exfoliating 24–48 hours before your appointment
Drinking water and moisturizing daily in the days leading up
Arriving product-free — no lotion, no deodorant, no perfume
Moisturizing daily after your tan with an oil-free lotion
Switching to a gel-based body wash while your tan is active
At Bronze Madison, every appointment includes a pH prep wipe that balances your skin and removes any last traces of product before we start. It's our way of making sure you're set up for the best result possible — even if life happened that morning and prep didn't go perfectly.
The more consistently you tan, the better and longer your results get too. Regular clients who are in a rhythm with their prep and aftercare routine almost always see color that lasts closer to that 10–12 day range.
Think of it like learning anything new, the first time takes a little thought. After that it's just part of your routine and you barely think about it.
